Why there is nothing to install
Splitting a dinner bill is a two-minute job. Asking four people to find an app, download it, create an account and confirm an email address before that job can start is more work than the job — which is why the group chat maths usually wins.
This is a web page. Opening the link is the whole installation. The person who created the group and the four people they sent it to all do the same thing: tap, and start typing.
It still works with no connection
The usual trade for skipping the download is that nothing works on a patchy signal. That is not the trade here: Splitly is a progressive web app, so once a group has been opened on a device it stays readable offline, and expenses added with no signal are sent when the connection comes back.
That covers the case this is actually for — a restaurant basement, a hill station, a foreign SIM that has run out of data.
Install it anyway, if you want to
Your browser will offer to add it to your home screen. Taking that offer gives you an icon, a full screen without the address bar, and the same app — it is the same page, saved rather than downloaded, and it does not go through an app store.
Declining costs nothing. Everything works the same in an ordinary browser tab, which is the point.
What a native app does better
Two things, honestly. Notifications are more reliable on a native app than on a web one, particularly on iOS. And an icon on the home screen is easier to find again than a bookmark — which is exactly what the install offer above exists to fix.
If your group splits expenses every day, either is a fair reason to prefer an installed app. If you are splitting a weekend, a website that opens in one tap is the faster answer.
